Sample In-Service Training Projects

The MEGACourse is integrated with practical skill development offered through in-service training on HIV, STDs, TB & Viral Hepatitis (non-enteric) Epidemiology projects that interns and fellows may be assigned to work on. Findings and articles derived from these projects are expected to contribute to Epidemiologic profiles and supplements thereof, which will in turn be used to support public health practice (i.e. disease control and prevention policy and program planning, development, implementation, and outcome evaluation).

Examples of project topics include the following:

	Project Title: Supplemental Applied Epidemiology Analyses of HIV, STI, TB and Viral Hepatitis (non-enteric) Surveillance Data Project Objectives: Analyze available, routinely collected HIV, STI, TB and Viral Hepatitis (non-enteric) morbidity and mortality data, and conduct supplemental studies in order to provide the data necessary for prevention and care planning, and development, implementation and outcome evaluation of public health interventions/services. 	Project Title: Pilot of Expanded Testing/Screening for HIV, STI, TB and Viral Hepatitis (non-enteric) in Clinical Settings (including prenatal and birthing settings) Project Objectives: Analyze available, routinely collected HIV, STI, TB and Viral Hepatitis (non-enteric) morbidity and mortality data, and conduct supplemental studies in order to provide the data necessary for prevention and care planning, and development, implementation and outcome evaluation of public health interventions/services. 	Project Title: Serosurveillance/Screening for HIV, STI, TB and Viral Hepatitis (non-enteric) in Incarcerated Populations Project Objectives: Use remnant serum specimens from mandatory annual inmate intake screening for syphilis to conduct annual cross-sectional serosurveillance for HIV, STIs, and Viral Hepatitis. 	Project Title: Serosurveillance/Screening for HIV, STI, TB and Viral Hepatitis (non-enteric) among Job Corps Entrants Project Objectives: Conduct annual cross-sectional serosurveillance among Job Corps entrants by using data from mandatory annual intake screening for HIV. 	Project Title: Evaluation of an HIV Rapid Testing Pilot in a Transient/Homeless Population Project Objectives: Pilot implementation of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) using rapid testing and partner counseling and referral services (PCRS) in a transient/homeless population. 	Project Title: Monitoring of Perinatal Exposure to HIV Project Objectives: Conduct comprehensive measurement/monitoring of perinatal exposure to HIV and measure progress on service delivery/prenatal testing of all women who deliver livebirths. 	Project Title: Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and STI-HIV Serosurveillance in School-based Settings Project Objectives: Conduct a 2-arm study to investigate: a) the extent of HIV-STI related sexual and substance use behavioral risk factors through this school-based cross-sectional survey, i.e. the YRBS project; in conjunction with b) school-based screening (incl. cross-sectional serosurveillance) and treatment of HIV and STI comorbidity in the school-going adolescent population in PA.
