iHASEInstitute of HIV/AIDS Surveillance & Epidemiology

  .. the institute ..

The raison d'etre of the institute is the discovery, synthesis, transmission, and application of applied and translational public health epidemiology knowledge derived from multidisciplinary research domains such as public health surveillance, outbreak analyses and modeling of attendant population transmission dynamics, cross-scale causal analyses spanning the continuum of molecular/genomic to population levels, disease intervention epidemiology and outcome evaluation studies. The inspiration for this initiative and our quest to make our global collaborative research endeavors an openly accessible public resource is driven by the ubuntu experience, a classic Southern African ethic and humanist philosophy as elucidated by Nelson Mandela in this video clip.

Public Health Surveillance {n}. the ongoing systematic

collection, analysis, and interpretation

of outcome-specific data for use in

planning, implementation, and evaluation

of public health practice

Epidemiology {n} the study (research) of the

distribution [description of person(who), place(where), time(when)] &

determinants [causes(risk factors) and effect(outcome) relationships]

of disease and injuries in human populations

Applied HIV Epidemiology: surveillance (disease burden, risk factor and outcome measurement at the population level), and

intervention Epidemiology research support

for HIV prevention and care/treatment programs

(HIV, Human Immunodeficiency Virus is the necessary cause of AIDS, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)

iHASE mission: Forging collaboration & partnerships in HIV Surveillance & applied HIV Epidemiology research in support of public health program implementation ...

From molecules ... transmission dynamics  .. to pandemics

applied HIV epidemiology expertise & in-service training/capacity development

iHASE brings together academic scientific rigor and public health practice in a range of complimentary disciplines to innovate in applied and translational epidemiology research and develop public health/population-level solutions to control and prevent HIV and related diseases such as STIs, TB and non-enteric viral hepatitis. Through forging these partnerships, the Institute facilitates applied and translational epidemiology expertise/knowledge transfer, consulting support, quality assurance and continuing education through peer-review, and in-service training/capacity development for public health agencies serving highly-impacted communities.
