| What
is HIV/AIDS? |
 |
- HIV,
also known as human immunodeficiency virus, is the virus that causes
AIDS. As a retrovirus, the virus copies its genetic
information and takes over the DNA of healthy white blood cells or
T-cells in order to replicate itself;
- AIDS
or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, is a manifestation of an advanced
HIV disease stage characterized by breakdown of the immune system
which prevents the body from fighting opportunistic diseases. AIDS is
clinically defined by a presence of HIV infection and a low level of
white blood cells or T-cells or other AIDS-defining opportunistic
illnesses. A normal adult has ~500-1500 of T-cells in every microliter(µL) of blood, but an AIDS patient has less than 200.
